The Ramadan Project began three years ago as an annual act of charity. We first started in July 2012, in the month of Ramadan hence the project name. As you may well know, the month of Ramadan is an important time for the Muslim community as we all band together in the blessed month of fasting to show our compassion to those who need it most. In order to do this we started the Ramadan Project. This project consists of giving out essential supplements to poor families for fasting such as rice, oil, lentils and cash money to relieve their struggles.
2012 – we started out with two villages, in which have 162 families to supply food and money with. This totalled in money as 2, 28,000.00 BD Taka (Two Lack twenty eight thousand taka). Following this success, we decided to carry this onto 2013. This is when we believed that this should be a yearly goal to help the needy.
2013 – the number increased to four villages equalling to 210 families and totalled in 3, 44,500.00 BD Taka (Three Lack forty four thousand five hundred taka) money.
2014 – the number of those who we were helping increased by 235 families equalling to 245 families in five villages. The money totalled in 2, 88,420.00 BD Taka (Two lacks eighty eight thousand four hundred and twenty).
2015 – the number of those who we were helping increased by 275 families to five villages. The money totaled 3,12,470.00 BD Taka (Three Lack twelve thousand four hundred and seventy).
2016 – like every year we help a total of 280 families in 5 villages. Money BD Taka totaled to 3,73,000.00 (three lack seventy three thousand).
2017 – like the previous year this year we helped a total of 338 families including 36 Hindu families in 5 villages. Money BD Taka totaled to 4,00,000.00 (four lack).
2018 – as like every year this year we helped a total of 261 families in 5 villages. Money totalled to 4,77,020.00 BD Taka (four lack seventy seven thousand and twenty).
2019 – like all the years before we helped a total of 278 families in 5 villages – Muslim families equalling 242 families and 36 Hindu families. The money BD Taka totalling to 4,05,000.00 (four lack five thousand).
2020 – Amid the Covid-19 pandemic we had decided that we will continue with Ramadan Project however this year it was different then previous years, in which we distributed to not only the poor but also those who were suffering financially in general. Therefore, we distributed to 425 families along with 35 non-muslim families. Money this year totalled to BD Taka 4,11,000:00 (four lack eleven thousand taka).
The idea of helping people was always in our mind but the unexpected success of this project overwhelmed us, the members, with happiness. We received amazing feedback in the first year which motivated us to continue the year after that, and the year after that. Hopefully we will try to continue with this for the coming years and now, we can expand our work to you, the public.
